Flies, Flames, and Fumes

Yesterday UFO Productions (the land use group) spent the morning observing land tortoises. In the afternoon, we visited the recycling center and landfill on Santa Cruz.

Our first impression was that the recycling center was well organized and efficient. Two puppies accompanied us as we explored the facility. The landfill, however, was another story. We drove through a wall of smoke to the center of the burning trash. Plastics, glass, metal, and all other unwanted materials were releasing their harsh chemicals into the island air. We only stayed for a short time, as the fumes were overwhelming and flies covered our equipment and ourselves. Unfortunately, a lot of items in the landfill could have been recycled. Also, there was no supervision - people just drive up, dump their waste, and leave.

Another day, another trash pile.

To Market...or should I say al mercado

Hola! Kate, Kelsey, and I had a wonderful excursion to Otavalo Market. We enjoyed looking at all the merchandise (and picked up a few souvenirs), and especially enjoyed  observing the family dynamic of the stalls. We made arrangements with a cab driver to take us up to Otavalo, wait for us while we explored, and drive us back, all for a very reasonable price.

Anybody need a hat?

The fabrics were so beautiful...if only we could fit more in our luggage!

Heading to Ecuador

Several of the students are already in Ecuador and a few more leave tomorrow, Saturday. I'll be at graduation, sitting jealously. Quito is one of my favorite cities, wonderfully nestled into the Andes. The central square in Old Town is marvelous, Avenue of the Volcanoes impressive, Otovalo a real paradise. Ah....
